In March 1999, I left a marketing career to work at Great Lakes Pump & Supply. I worked in sales for 10 years when I was offered a career and life-changing opportunity. I moved to outside sales, complete with the emergency calls to plants at every hour and day of the week, customers short on patience, the seemingly impossible-to-meet logistical demands, and that nasty rhetorical question, “Do you know how much money I will lose for every minute I am shut down?!!!”
The thing is, I get it. I love it. It was the best decision I could have made.
Unique Experiences
Yes, one risk of being in sales in the pressure-cooker of manufacturing is getting burned, but this trip has mostly been about developing warm relationships with great people, working toward common goals, meeting industry’s fluid management needs, and selling the best industrial pumps made, Gusher Pumps. That experience working here has been backed by the wealth of knowledge in this building. As a group we can solve anything.
Since starting here, I have had the opportunity to work with many great people, each one special and unique in their own way. I have learned something from each.
No one will believe the time – even 20 years from now – when we had to swap out 89 motors in three auto plants across the country during high production time or travel by planes, trains, and automobiles to add flush lines pumps in China, but we did it. We stand behind our equipment and so do our valued suppliers.
In my near 20 years working here, I’ve come to hate mechanical seals. When they fail, and they always do, it’s always pinned on the pump, never the seal manufacturer. I hear this over and over and over again.
